This festival, the name of which translates as ‘old ploughs’ (a reference to its Breton countryside setting and roots), is coming up for 20 years of existence now and has established itself as one of France’s major rock festivals (another contender, La Route de Rock, is also held in Brittany).
It’s very much along the lines of UK festivals like Glastonbury in that most visitors camp in tents, but with the advantage that the tickets are considerably cheaper, a fact that is a point of pride for the organisers.
Big domestic names and big alternative international stars share the stages – 2010 bill featured big French names like Phoenix, M and Alain Souchon as well as Muse and The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas. Fortunately there’s also room for cult local acts like Sexy Sushi, a sardonic electro-pop duo from Nantes.
